Playing in front of another soldout crowd at Heart Health Park, Republic FC extended its undefeated streak to seven matches and posted its second consecutive clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against San Antonio FC. Sacramento controlled much of the match and recorded a season-high 21 shots, but ultimately a choppy second half led the Indomitable Club to settle for a point.
Sacramento had the first real chance by either side in the 25th minute. Memo Rodriguez popped the ball outside for Jack Gurr, who beat his defender with a crossover to deliver a curling cross to Cal Jennings in front of goal. Jennings used his head to get a touch to the ball, but the play ended as the ball glanced the post to go out for a goal kick.
A few minutes later, Republic FC rallied off a series of close chances from a recycled corner kick. Alfredo Midence got the ball at the top of the box and fired a shot that was first blocked in traffic. Midence got the rebound and once again sent in a strong, dangerous shot from the edge of the 18-yard box, but this time San Antonio’s keeper managed to make the save.
Republic FC’s pressure continued and nearly paid off in the 32nd minute. Cal Jennings took control of the ball in the middle of the pitch and drove it down the heart of San Antonio’s defense. His shot was blocked by a defender but only went as far as Jack Gurr on the edge of the 18-yard box. Gurr’s outside-of-the-foot shot went to the far post, just narrowly missing the target.
Sacramento had another chance in the 43rd minute. The plan began as Memo Rodriguez intercepted a San Antonio outlet pass. Battling through contact, Memo laid the ball off to Cal Jennings, who moved it forward to Alfredo Midence. Midence got the ball on his left and sent a shot towards the target that forced the keeper to react with a quick kick to make the save.
Republic FC found more chances on the other side of the break. In the 50th minute, Alfredo Midence would once again have a go at things, beating two defenders to send a left-footed shot that hit the woodwork.
Sacramento hit the post for a third time in the 59th minute. Memo Rodriguez took control of the ball outside of the 18-yard box and put a low bouncing shot towards goal, but again the attempt was just off target, hitting the post to ricochet away.
Substitutes gave the Indomitable Club fresh legs and added energy as the match progressed. Two of those players – Arturo Rodriguez and Kyle Edwards – nearly connected to break the deadlock in the 85th minute. Rodriguez got the ball on the right flank and carried the ball forward before sending in a cross that was just inches too far for a diving Edwards.
Republic FC returns to action next Saturday with a road match against New Mexico United. The match from Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico kicks off at 6:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on FOX40+ and ESPN+.
