During the September 12 Back to School Night match, Republic FC teamed up with The PG&E Corporation Foundation to recognize the first-ever Next Gen STEM Scholarship recipient.
For Miguel Camacho Zamorano, engineering is more than a career goal. It’s a way to make a difference.
A recent graduate of Cordova High School, Miguel has already spent years putting his passion for engineering into action. From designing sensory and educational tools for neurodivergent students, to developing an innovative solution for flooding and pollution in the American River, he has used STEM to address real world challenges in his school and community.
“This experience helped me connect more with my community by using what I love, engineering, to give back. It made me feel accomplished and as if my hard work from all my years had paid off,” said Miguel. “Besides that, it taught me the process of community outreach and the importance of the design process in engineering projects. All-in-all, it helped me solidify and realize why I want to do engineering as I want to help the world, whether directly or indirectly.”
Miguel now attends Folsom Lake College and has big goals that go beyond his local involvement.
“I want to graduate from community college and then transfer to a four-year college to major in aerospace engineering,” he said. “After college, my goals are to work in an aerospace company and work on rocket propulsion systems. With aerospace engineering, I want to work on projects that will help humans advance in life and show that no matter what your situation is or what hardships you’ve faced, you can achieve your biggest dreams. I say this because not just aerospace engineering, but it is a difficult field to get into and achieve success in.”
