Republic FC has officially secured its spot in the postseason with its 11th consecutive undefeated match with a 1-1 draw against Colorado Springs Switchbacks on Saturday night. After conceding a goal early in the second half, the Indomitable Club fought its way back into the match and with the energy of the soldout crowd at Heart Health Park, Kyle Edwards netted the equalizer from the penalty spot.
Danny Vitiello came up with a big save in the 7th minute. The Switchbacks’ Adrien Perez took the ball up the right sideline and put a cross to Frank Daroma for a one-touch shot from inside the 18-yard box, but Vitiello went low to dig out a block that stopped the danger.
Vitiello kept the match level with a second save in the 22nd minute. Adrien Perez carried the ball forward and took a shot from the edge of the box, but Danny was ready and punched the ball away. The play continued as Colorado Springs tried to send in a cross, but this time Vitiello came off his line to collect.
Republic FC began to build some momentum late in the first half and looked to carry it forward after the break, but the Switchbacks would get on the board in the 48th minute when Talen Maples connected with a free kick from Adrien Perez.
A Memo Rodriguez corner kick forced Colorado Springs Switchbacks goalkeeper Christian Herrera into service in the 67th minute. The ball was punched away, but only as far as Jack Gurr at the top of the box. Gurr kept his one-touch shot low, but it was blocked by a diving defender.
The Indomitable Club kept up its second half pressure and in the 75th minute brought the match level. Memo Rodriguez was brought down in the box, and after Colorado Springs attempted to delay the penalty, Kyle Edwards made no doubt about it as he blasted his shot past the goalkeeper.
Two games remain in the regular season, starting with next Saturday’s road match against El Paso Locomotive. That match kicks off from Southwest University Park at 6:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on FOX40+ and ESPN+.
Sacramento’s regular season finale is set for October 24 as NorCal rivals Oakland Roots make their way to the Capital City. That match kicks off at 7:00 p.m. and tickets are available now at SacRepublicFC.com.
