Sacramento Republic FC midfielder Villyan Bijev has been named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 21. This is Bijev's second time this season on the TOTW, having previously been named in Week 6. Bijev joins Mitchell Taintor as the only two Republic FC players to have been recognized twice this season on the TOTW.
Bijev brought fans at Papa Murphy's Park to their feet in the 76th minute with a stunning goal from outside the box, bringing his season total to four. The goal would clinch all three points for Republic FC and the regular season series against Fresno, as Sacramento took a 1-0 win. Along with the goal, Bijev recorded four key passes in the match.
“It’s always exciting to score,” said Bijev. “I love Fresno because that’s where I grew up and that’s where my family is and where my roots are. But when we come on the pitch, I play for the crest that I wear. It felt great to score a goal and luckily it was a fantastic goal and one that we needed to get the three points, which is what’s most important to me.”
