Sacramento Republic FC forward Cameron Iwasa was named to the USL Team of the Week for week 23 for his performance in Republic FC’s 1-0 win over Orange County Blues FC on Wednesday, Aug. 24.
Iwasa scored the match winner in the 76th minute, giving Republic FC their first win against the Blues since 2014. With his goal, Iwasa tied Tommy Stewart’s record of most USL goals in a season at 11. Iwasa also became only the third player in Republic FC history to score more than 10 goals in a season with his match-winning goal. This was also the third consecutive match in which Iwasa scored, having scored in Republic FC’s two previous matches against Saint Louis FC and Portland Timbers 2.
The Sacramento native has been named to the USL Team of the Week twice this season. Iwasa previously earned Team of the Week honors for his brace in Republic FC’s 4-3 win against Saint Louis FC in Week 21. This is also the third week in a row that Republic FC has had a player recognized on the USL Team of the Week. Midfielder Matt LaGrassa was recognized with Iwasa for Week 21 and midfielder Tommy Thompson was named to the Team of the Week for Week 22 after recording an assist and a goal against Portland Timbers 2 on Saturday, Aug. 20.
Iwasa is joined on the USL Team of the Week by goalkeeper Matt Cardone (San Antonio FC), defenders Sergio Campbell (Pittsburgh Riverhounds), Amer Didic (Swope Park Rangers), and Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls II), midfielders Guy Abend (Louisville City FC), Scott Thomsen (Richmond Kickers), Louis Beland-Goyette (FC Montreal) and Ataullah Guerra (Charleston Battery), forwards Ruben Luna (Rio Grande Valley FC) and Corey Hertzog (Pittsburgh Riverhounds).
