Sacramento Republic FC announced this week that the Runnin’ For Rhett Foundation is the next recipient of a Glory Glory Sacramento Fund grant. The nonprofit during halftime of the Republic FC vs Orange County Blues match on Sept. 3 and will receive a $20,000 grant to fund 700 students enrolled in programming aimed at teaching underserved youth about health and fitness.
The Runnin’ for Rhett Foundation was inspired by the legacy of Rhett Seevers, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at just four months old. After his death in 2004 at the age of seven, Beth Seevers, Rhett’s mom, was introduced to running by a family friend and in 2007, the Runnin’ for Rhett Foundation was born.
Runnin’ For Rhett’s Youth Fitness Program is one program within the Foundation that is dedicated to teaching underserved families about the importance of physical activity and nutrition with the Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties. The program provides students with five weeks of training where they meet twice a week with coaches to learn about proper nutrition as well as running and stretching techniques.
All participants also receive entrance to the Run Because You Can race, an annual 5K run/walk that is a part of the Runnin’ For Rhett Foundation race events, along with a Runnin’ for Rhett t-shirt, wristband and a finishing medal.
The grant from the Glory Glory Sacramento Fund will be used to cover the expenses for more than 700 Runnin’ For Rhett Youth Fitness Program participants. These students are part of a larger 6,200 students served by the Runnin’ For Rhett Youth Fitness program across 126 Sacramento area schools.
Aside from the $20,000 grant awarded, the Foundation will also be partnered with Republic FC forward Harry Williams. Williams will serve as a spokesperson and mentor for the program, as well as visit student events.
The Glory Glory Sacramento Fund was founded this past spring to celebrate and elevate nonprofits that share the same indomitable spirit as our region. The Fund provides individual grants up to $20,000 for nonprofits selected.
Since May, the Fund has distributed grants to twelve nonprofits, including the Runnin’ for Rhett Foundation. The other nonprofits that have been recognized and received grants from the Glory Glory Sacramento Fund include StudentReach, College Track, Powerhouse Science Center, La Familia Counseling Center, Sacramento Regional Conversation Corps, Cristo Rey High School, Community Outreach Academy, 916 Ink, Waking the Village, Street Soccer USA and the Capital Dance Project. The final three grants for 2016 will be awarded at the September 17 match.
