This was the second match of a back-to-back for Republic FC. The match started slow with both teams feeling each other out. Republic FC then came alive in the 33rd minute when defender Mickey Daly scored his second goal in as many matches.
Daly’s goal came after forward Justin Braun had a diving header blocked by a defender setting up a corner. Max Alvarez took the corner that was cleared to the edge of the box where forward Thomas Stewart headed it back. The header found the back heel of Daly who expertly flicked the ball toward goal and over the outstretched hand of Galaxy II goalkeeper Brian Rowe.
Republic FC added to their lead just before half when Alvarez broke through the defense and chipped the ball over an onrushing Rowe for his first professional goal.
Galaxy II showed some life at the start of the second half with forward Chandler Hoffman making a strong run at goal before being stopped by Republic FC goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek in the 62nd minute. Jakubek made another great save in the 71st minute when he out-jumped a Galaxy II player waiting for a headed cross.
Republic FC struck again in the 75th minute when an Alvarez cross hit the back of a defender landing in front of substitute forward Dakota Collins. Defender Emrah Klimenta held off a Galaxy II defender allowing Collins a clear shot from about seven yards out which he placed in the lower left corner of the goal.
“We put pressure on every guy who had the ball and took advantage of their mistakes” said Alvarez. “We knew that we need to be more skillful and we didn’t take them lightly. We were prepared, had a game-plan and we executed.”
The match marked the first appearances for midfielder Gilberto Dos Santos Souza Jr., forward Chad Bartlomé and defenders Carlos Martinez and Jose “Cristian” Gonzalez. The match was also the first start for goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek, defender Jack Avesyan and forward Thomas Stewart.
Jakubek recorded the only save in the match which saw only three total shots by Galaxy II. Midfielder Robbie Rogers made his USL PRO debut for Galaxy II as a substitute in the second half.
Republic FC complete the last five road matches taking on Arizona United SC on Saturday, April 19 at the Peoria Sports Complex. This will be the first of four regular season matchups between Republic FC and Arizona United SC.
