Sacramento Republic FC will host their MLS affiliates, the San Jose Earthquakes, in their second friendly match of the 2016 preseason on Saturday, Feb. 20. Kickoff is 5 p.m. PST at Bonney Field. The match is presented by Well Fargo.
Saturday’s match will be the fifth time that the two clubs have met in Republic FC’s three-year history. The Earthquakes have won all four matches. The last matchup between the two sides was in the Fourth Round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Republic FC went up 2-0 early in the second half of the match behind goals from Rodrigo Lopez and Emrah Klimenta, but a late brace from Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski forced the match into extra time. After a scoreless 30 minutes of extra time, the match went to penalties. The Quakes advanced after a 6-5 victory in penalties.
During the 2015 season, Republic FC received three players on loan from the Earthquakes leading into the final third of the season. Tommy Thompson, JJ Koval and Mark Sherrod joined Republic FC with five matches to go. Thompson, a Sacramento-area native, scored a goal and added two assists, and Sherrod added a goal of his own.
Republic FC enter the friendly after falling 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids in their first preseason friendly on Saturday, Feb. 13. The Rapids scored late in the 86th minute to leave Bonney Field with the win.
All four of Republic FC’s offseason free agent signings played in Saturday’s match. Goalkeeper Evan Newton and defenders Mike da Fonte and Chris Christian put in full 90 minute shifts against the Rapids, while rookie midfielder Matt LaGrassa played 36 minutes. Newton, da Fonte and Christian helped limit the Rapids to just three shots on goal.
The Earthquakes enter the match after spending most of their preseason to-date on the road in Tucson, Ariz. During their week in Tucson the Quakes played three matches before traveling to Las Vegas to take on LA Galaxy in a friendly.
During the offseason the Quakes made several moves, including bringing in forward Chad Barrett, midfielder Simon Dawkins and defender Andrews Imperiale. Barrett, an MLS veteran, signed as the Earthquakes first-ever free agent signing. Dawkins joined the Quakes as a Designated Player after spending the last two seasons with Derby County of the English Championship. Dawkins previously played for the Quakes in 2012. Imperiale is an Argentinian defender who has spent time in the Argentinian, Costa Rican, Chilean, Cyprian and Bolivian top divisions.
