Rio Grande Valley FC Toros
Rio Grande Valley FC Toros is one of two new Texan clubs entering the USL in 2016 alongside San Antonio FC. The club is a hybrid affiliate with MLS club Houston Dynamo. As part of the partnership, the Dynamo are in charge of the technical side of the club, including technical staff appointments and building the club’s roster ahead of their inaugural season.
RGV FC, which also operates the NBA D-League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, will manage business operations for the club, including the current construction of a 9,400-seat state-of-the-art soccer stadium in Edinburg, Texas, 330 miles southwest of Houston.
In early December 2015, the Houston Dynamo appointed Wilmer Cabrera as the club’s head coach. Cabrera has vast experience developing young players, previously serving as the U.S. Men’s U-17s National Team head coach. He also has experience coaching in the MLS, first serving as assistant coach with the Colorado Rapids for two years before taking charge of Chivas USA in their final year in the league.
That same month, Houston Dynamo signed forward Juan “Charly” Flores for RGV FC Toros. The 18-year-old Flores is a product of the Houston Dynamo Academy and is also a Houston native.
Republic FC and RVG FC will meet twice this season. The first meeting will be at Bonney Field on Saturday, June 18. Kickoff is 8:00 p.m. Republic FC will then travel to Edinburg, Texas, on Saturday, July 30, to face RVG FC at Rio Grande Valley FC Toros Stadium. Kickoff will be at 5:30 p.m.
