Sacramento Republic FC U-17/18 forward Alexis Dionicio was named to the U.S. Under-19 Men’s National Team by head coach Brad Friedel for a domestic training camp in Chula Vista, Calif. from Oct. 3-10. The call-up is Dionicio’s first as a member of Republic FC Academy and the Academy’s first call-up during the 2017-2018 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season.
“Representing Sacramento is a big honor for me. It’s something I’ve always worked for,” said Dionicio, who has received previous youth national team call-ups prior to joining Republic FC. “Being called up the national team is something important for me and it’s a dream come true to be able the represent the country again.”
Dionicio has appeared in four U-17/18 Republic FC matches this season, starting three and scoring one goal. During the 2015-2016, Dionicio scored seven goals in the U-17/18s inaugural season and recorded one goal in the postseason.
During U-19s training camp, the U.S. will play Liga MX side Xolos’ reserve squad at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. PT on Oct. 7, and will then play another match at 4 p.m. PT on Oct. 9, with the opponent still to be determined.
This camp is the U-19 MNT’s first training camp since the Stevan Vilotic Tournament in Subotica, Serbia in September.
Dionicio will be joined by several players that have played against Republic FC during the 2016 USL regular season, including Marco Farfan (Portland Timbers 2), Felipe Hernandez (Swope Park Rangers) and Ethan Zubak (LA Galaxy II).
To-date, eight Republic FC Academy players and alumni have been called up to their respective youth national teams.
“It’s a huge testament to our Academy and to Alexis as well,” said Republic FC U-17/18 Academy Head Coach Benjamin Ziemer. “He is such a gifted, incredible worker and it’s great to see all of his hard work come to fruition.”
