Sacramento Republic FC, in partnership with Jiffy Lube and Capes4Heroes, delivered superhero capes to patients at UC Davis Children’s Hospital on Thursday.
Capes4Heroes is a non-profit that provides personalized superhero capes for child heroes battling life-threatening illnesses, disabilities or life struggles.
Goalkeeper Evan Newton led the efforts to deliver more than 100 customized superhero capes for UC Davis Children’s Hospital patients and their siblings, serving as the culmination of efforts from Republic FC’s third annual Caped Crusader Night presented by Jiffy Lube.
As part of Caped Crusader Night on Aug. 20, Republic FC players wore custom capes made by Capes4Heroes during the prematch walkout. The capes were later auctioned to raise money for the Northern California nonprofit. In all, fans donated more than $4,260 to the cause. To-date, Republic FC fans have helped raise more than $12,430 since the club’s inaugural season.
With the funds raised through the auction Capes4Heroes was able to create 167 hand-made capes, which were delivered to patients at UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
Thursday’s visit included Newton, along with representatives from Capes4Heroes, Republic FC and Jiffy Lube, who visited patients and helped them choose their capes. Capes4Heroes volunteers then custom embroidered the first initial of the patient on each cape.
