Sacramento Republic FC’s U-16/15 and U-17/18 Academy teams will face off against Southern California rivals LA Galaxy Academy this Saturday, Nov. 19. Kickoff for the U-17/18s is 10:00 a.m. and kickoff for the U-15/16s is 12:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at Cosumnes River College and are free and open to the public.
This is the second rivalry series for Republic FC’s Academy, having already played against San Jose Earthquakes Academy earlier this season. Republic FC Academy’s rivalry with the LA Galaxy Academy carries over from the first team’s rivalry with Galaxy II, stemming from matches such as Republic FC’s thrilling 3-2 semifinal win in the 2014 USL Playoffs. Republic FC’s first team remained undefeated against LA Galaxy II this season, going 1-0-3.
Republic FC’s U-17/18 and U-15/16 teams both enter the weekend at the top of their respective Northwest divisions in the DA Western Conference. Republic FC U-15/16s currently lead their division with 22 points, six points ahead of second-placed San Jose Earthquakes, with a record of 7-3-1. Midfielder Oscar Govea leads the team in goals with four in nine matches.
LA Galaxy U-15/16 are currently on a four-match win streak, their last loss coming on Oct. 22 against their Arsenal FC counterparts. In eleven matches played, the Galaxy U-15/16s have won nine of those, and racked up tie and a loss. Forward Misael Becerra leads the U-15/16s in goals with six in 10 appearances. The 16-year-old forward has also made an appearance for the Galaxy U-17/18s, scoring a goal in his only appearance and start with the oldest Galaxy team in their 7-0 win over Santa Cruz Breakers Academy U-17/18.
The U-15/16s had a great 2015-2016 season, advancing all the way tothe U.S. Soccer Development Academy championship match. Finishing top of their knockout group, they defeated So Cal FC in the quarterfinals and Real Colorado in the semifinals to reach the DA Championship but fell to their FC Dallas counterparts in the final.
For their part, Republic FC U-17/18s hold 20 points in 11 matches, with a 6-3-2 record. The team is three points ahead of second-place San Jose Earthquakes. Leading the Republic FC U-17/18s in goal are forward Francis Avoce, midfielder Ryley Kraft, and defenders Seamus McLaughlin and Matteo Sorrentino, each with three goals so far this season. The team holds a record of 4-5-2 with 14 points from their matches to-date this season. The team is led offensively by goal scorer Leonel Alvarenga, who has four goals in nine appearances (seven starts). Last season, the Galaxy U-17/18s finished second in the Southwest division during regular season, claiming a playoff spot but they were knocked out in the first round of the Development Academy playoffs.
There could be a familiar name for Republic FC fans on the Galaxy U-17/18s roster. Los Dos forward Ethan Zubak is back for another season with Galaxy’s Academy. The 18-year-old forward was signed by LA Galaxy II on May 18 and scored at Bonney Field on Sept. 17 in Republic FC’s 1-1 draw with Los Dos. Last season, Zubak started in all 24 of his appearances, leading the Galaxy U-17/18 team with 16 goals, double the number of the next highest goal scorer on the roster. This season, Zubak has two goals in two matches with the Academy, scoring two goals in Galaxy U-17/18’s 7-0 defeat of their De Anza Force counterparts.
