(May 11, 2017) – Sacramento Republic FC will enter the 104th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when they host FC Anahuac (UPSL) in a Second Round Match on Wednesday, May 17 at Papa Murphy’s Park. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the match are still available on Ticketmaster.com.
Last year, Sacramento Republic FC advanced to the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup by defeating CD Aguiluchos USA (UPSL) 5-0 on May 18, 2016. Republic FC were eliminated from the tournament on June 1, 2016 when they fell 3-1 to the Kitsap Pumas (PDL).
FC Anahuac won their First Round match 5-4 on penalties after tying the Sonoma County Sol (NPSL) 1-1 in extra time. FC Anahuac are the 2016 Fall Season UPSL Champion, going 13-1-1 on the season. Originally founded in 1966, FC Anahuac is based in Las Vegas, Nev. and are the first amateur team from the state of Nevada to compete in the U.S. Open Cup since 1995.
The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest-running open soccer tournament. Entering its 104th year of competition, this year’s U.S. Open Cup will feature a record 99 teams participating in the tiered-bracket and single-game knockout tournament. 18 USL, 6 NASL and 19 MLS teams join 56 lower division teams in the tournament.
The winning team of the U.S. Open Cup will receive a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League for the next season, have their name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy and receive a cash prize. FC Dallas (MLS) are the defending U.S. Open Cup champions.
