Sacramento Republic FC travel to Sin City this week to take on Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday, April 14. Kickoff at Cashman Field is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live on KQCA My58, Estrella TV 58.3 and ESPN+.
Saturday’s match will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides, as Las Vegas is playing in its inaugural season in 2018. Both sides are unbeaten in USL play this year and will be looking to continue to their hot starts to the season.
Republic FC extended its undefeated record following a 1-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC 2 last weekend. Defender Shannon Gomez was awarded a penalty kick in the 71st minute and midfielder Adam Moffat slotted it home for the lone goal in the match. Defender Mitchell Taintor was sent off with a straight red card for a challenge in the 20th minute, while S2 had two players sent off, in the 44th and 64th minutes, as the match ended in a rare 10 v. 9 situation.
Taintor will miss Saturday’s match due to suspension from his red card against S2. For Moffat, the goal was his first in a Republic FC kit. The MLS veteran battled injuries during his first year with the club in 2017 but has returned to claim a starting role in the midfield this year. Goalkeeper Josh Cohen made a crucial save late against S2 to preserve the lead and help earn Republic FC all three points
Lights FC also enter the match with an unbeaten record (2-0-1) after having a bye this past weekend. Their last game was a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Swope Park Rangers. The team is led by March’s USL Coach of the Month, Isidro Sánchez, who is the son of Jose Luis “El Chelis” Sánchez Solá, the club’s Technical Director and former Liga MX coach.
On the field, Las Vegas is captained by defender Joel Huiqui, a former Mexico international who has been featured on the USL Team of the Week. Lights FC also employ a familiar face to Republic FC fans in Sammy Ochoa. The forward led Republic FC in goals and assists during his lone season in Sacramento in 2017.
Republic FC will host two official watch parties at New Helvetia Brewing Company off Broadway and Grist Beer Hall (Folsom). The match will also be shown at Craft Beer Vault (Rocklin).
