Sacramento Republic FC goalkeeper Josh Cohen has been named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 10. This is Cohen’s first appearance on the Team of the Week this season. The goalkeeper becomes the fourth Republic FC player to be recognized, with Mitch Taintor, Jaime Villarreal and Villyan Bijev having been named to earlier USL Teams of the Week in 2018.
Cohen posted an outstanding performance against his former club, Phoenix Rising FC, to give Republic FC a 3-1 road win. Republic FC took the lead through goals from Cameron Iwasa and Villyan Bijev, but in the 32nd minute, the ref pointed to the penalty spot after Carlos Rodriguez was called for a foul in the box. Didier Drogba stepped up to take the penalty kick but his effort was saved by Cohen. The goalkeeper made a second save on a rebound shot before the referee called a foul and no goal for Rising FC.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper had two more spectacular saves on free kicks in the match, and recorded seven saves to help Republic FC clinch a win in Phoenix. Overall in the 2018 season, Cohen has recorded two clean sheets and has been a crucial part of Republic FC’s strong start to the season.
Republic FC are back on the road this Wednesday when they head to Reno 1868 FC for the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Greater Nevada Field. Details on streaming will follow shortly. You can follow the match on Twitter at @www.sacrepublicfc.com or using #USOC2018.
