Updated September 27, 2018.
The final stretch is here.
With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, each point won or lost from here on out could prove to be the difference between making it into the playoffs and starting to plan for next season early.
As Republic FC prepare for their Sunday encounter against OKC Energy FC, here’s what you need to know ahead of the 2018 USL Playoffs.
Who makes it into the playoffs?
Out of 33 teams vying for a playoffs ticket, only 16 teams—the top eight from each conference—will earn a spot in the postseason.
Since Republic FC’s inaugural season in 2014, the club has yet to miss the playoffs. A win in Oklahoma on Sunday would go a long way to ensuring the trend continues on for a fifth consecutive year.
Who gets to host a playoff game?
The top four teams from each conference earn home-field advantage for their opening playoffs game. With less than six points currently separating the third and eighth seeds, teams can’t take their foot off the pedal even if they’re sitting comfortably in a playoffs position.
What if there’s a tie?
Ties happen, both on the pitch and in the standings. In the event that two or more teams end the regular season with the same amount of points, the following tiebreakers will be applied in the order listed:
- Total wins in League games
- Goal difference in League games
- Goals scored in League games
- Ranking based on points earned against top four Conference finishers
- If number of games is unequal, then point percentage applies
- FIFA Fair Play – Team with fewest disciplinary points in League games
- If number of games is unequal, points will be divided by games played to arrive at a common basis for comparison
- Lottery conducted by USL
Republic FC’s Road to Playoffs
Currently sitting in fourth place in the Western Conference standings, Republic FC clinched their playoffs spot last week after drawing with OKC Energy FC.
The Indomitable Club now turns its attention to finishing in the top four positions in order to host a home playoffs berth.
