A tough Week 2 contest with San Diego wasn’t as smooth for Mark Briggs’ men, who took their first loss of the season. Two first-half scores for the hosts were all San Diego needed, especially as excellent defense in the second half put down a high-intensity offensive approach from Sacramento that generated 13 shots and eight close-range opportunities.
Slowly but surely, Sacramento is getting pieces back from a few pre-season injuries. Defenders Duke Lacroix and Conor Donovan, who missed the last two weeks of training camp, made their season debuts in San Diego and have been back at full speed in training for the past two weeks. The duo will be available again Sunday, and their leadership will be integral to taking three points from a Tulsa squad featuring a scrappy, upstart group of players that’s performed well through three matches.
Opponent Report
Right off the bat, things will be tough for Tulsa in their first trip out west in over two years. Two key players – Joaquin Rivas and Ronald Rodriguez – will be unavailable as they represent El Salvador in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualification against Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Mexico. In addition, they’ll be playing their third match in seven days.
Tulsa did prove they can win without Rivas and Rodriguez on Wednesday, defeating a San Diego team fresh of a clean sheet win over Sacramento. The tight contest was decided by a 77th minute Dario Suarez game-winner, and excellent buildup play from the back from Gabi Torres – who assisted the score – and Petar Cuic, who combined to take possession from the visitors 17 times.
Head to Head
Through the first 10 contests between the two clubs, Sacramento is unbeaten, taking eight wins and splitting points twice. Republic FC has put together some big performances against the club throughout the years, outscoring them 30-10 and tallying multiple scores in all but two contests- a pair of 1-1 draws in April 2018 and March 2020.
