Sacramento, Calif. – On Thursday, USL Championship announced that Republic FC forward Douglas Martinez Jr. has been nominated for USL Fans’ Choice Player of the Month for March. Fans can vote for Martinez to receive the month’s top performer honors at USLChampionship.com through Monday, April 11 at 9:00 a.m.
In three matches, Martinez netted two goals and tallied two assists. On March 12, he netted the eventual game-winner for the Indomitable Club, and assisted a stoppage-time score by Keko Gontán. On March 27, he scored his second goal of the season after drawing a penalty, converting from the spot for a 33rd minute equalizer against FC Tulsa. On a clever backheel, Martinez played Duke Lacroix on to the game-winner, and earned his second assist in as many home matches.
For his performance, Martinez was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 1, and Team of the Week Bench for Week 3. The selections were his seventh and eighth all-time to the league’s weekly top squad. This is the first Player of the Month nomination for a Republic FC player since Cameron Iwasa was up for the honor in June of 2019.
Republic FC shifts their attention to U.S. Open Cup play on Thursday, when they host Portland Timbers U23 at Heart Health Park for a second-round matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:30PM, and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+. Tickets for the match are available at SacRepublicFC.com/single-match-tickets.
Voting for the league’s Player of the Month is open now at USLChampionship.com, and will run through Monday, April 11 at 9:00 a.m.
