Republic FC – The Latest
Sacramento took down Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy in the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal early in the week, upsetting a talented squad of high-level players with a plethora of big plays in key moments. Rodrigo Lopez opened the scoring in the 4th minute to set the tone before LA equalized in the 18th on a set piece. Luis Felipe put Sacramento ahead for good with a 70th-minute shot from distance that he snuck past the outstretched dive of Jonathan Klinsmann in goal.
Saturday’s match marks the third straight contest against an in-state foe for Sacramento after taking on Galaxy’s first team on Tuesday and Los Dos last Saturday. It also marks the fourth match against a regional foe this year. So far, Sacramento is unbeaten in regional derbies after besting Monterey and Central Valley Fuego FC in April, and Oakland and San Jose in the final week of May.
Opponent Report
Monterey Bay F.C. has had a tough go of late, dropping their last three matches and entering Saturday winless since May 28. The club fell to San Antonio FC after an 82nd-minute game-winner on June 11, and a Preston Judd hat trick put them down against Los Dos four days later. Saturday’s match will mark their first of two straight at home, and comes in the middle of a stretch where the club plays all but two contests at Cardinale Stadium through the end of July.
So far in their debut season, the club has struggled defensively, conceding the second-most scores in the entire league. Frank Yallop’s squad has made up for it by posting a 19% conversion rate, even with Louisville City FC for 6th in the USL Championship.
Head to Head
Sacramento and Monterey have met twice prior this season – once to wrap up preseason competition in March, and again in league play on April 2. Republic FC claimed the win in each contest, outscoring the Seaside club 5-3 and netting three goals from the penalty spot.
