The Latest – Republic FC
A positive and high-intensity week on the training field has the club optimistic they can push into September with a full head of steam. A regular period of rest between matches for just the second time since mid-July has provided the club a great window to rest and fine-tune the little details, and ready for a big stretch ahead. Knowing that Oakland will bring them all they’ve got, all the focus is on the effort to claim NorCal supremacy.
In two meetings with Oakland this season, Sacramento’s Luis Felipe has been excellent, netting a score in each contest. The midfielder put in the opener in their first matchup in May, and headed in the equalizer in the final seconds of the July 9 fixture.
Opponent Report
Oakland’s proven capable of beating teams of all calibers this season. On the heels of the draw with Sacramento on July 9, Roots put four goals on El Paso Locomotive, while holding a clean sheet. A tough mid-week roadie in San Diego Wednesday saw them take home a 3-1 victory behind scores from Juan Azocar, Emrah Klimenta, and Edgardo Rito.
The club will come to Sacramento with a new man at the helm, hoping to lead the Bay Area side to a playoff berth for the second straight season. Former assistant coach Noah Delgado took over the reins for the club last week after Manager Juan Guerra departed to lead Phoenix Rising FC.
Head to Head
This season, the two matches between Republic FC (11-7-7) and Oakland Roots (7-7-12) have each ended in draws. The club’s May 28 meeting at Laney saw Sacramento take the lead before the break behind great energy up top before the hosts equalized with a penalty late. On July 9, a shootout ended in a 3-3 draw as Sacramento scored to equalize in the final seconds of stoppage time. Republic FC has yet to defeat the Bay Area club in six all-time meetings, playing to a record of 0-1-5.
