Sacramento nabbed its first result in exhibition play Saturday against Real Salt Lake. After falling behind in the 6th minute, forward Douglas Martinez netted a spectacular score assisted by Keko to draw even in the 84th. The match sent the Quails to their next stop on a high note after a strong performance, and having shown a lot of progress since their arrival in the Desert. Through ten days and two matches against strong sides nearing the start of their season, the club has steadily put the pieces for the season together against high level competition.
Wednesday’s action is the club’s third exhibition against an MLS side this preseason – something that’s posed a challenge as the club continues to build cohesion, fitness, and learn the kind of football they want to play. But on the other side, when the club returns later in the week they’ll be better prepared than when they left. The three contests will have set a standard, and given the squad the tool to continue raising the level at which they play through the second half of training camp.
As the match is just 10 ahead of their 2023 season opener, Austin will be approaching full strength, likely making the final touches to their roster and system of play. The club has been in good form in recent exhibitions, with new signings at the forward position to support the newly-extended Sebastian Driussi strengthening the attack. After falling 3-2 on January 27 to FC Cincinnati, they bested El Paso Locomotive FC 5-0 and 2022 USL Championship finalist Louisville City 4-1.
