The long-awaited 2023 season is finally here. Saturday, Republic FC opens its 10th campaign on the road in the Lone Star state against El Paso Locomotive FC. After six weeks of training camp and eight exhibition matches, 34 league contests are now on the horizon, with league silverware now the goal.
In the lead-up to opening night, Sacramento has tested itself against strong opposition – taking on three MLS clubs in Chicago Fire, Real Salt Lake, and Austin FC. The club’s worked hard to integrate new players into the squad and establish and maintain a high standard for the season to come. This week, preparation turned to planning for what the club can expect against an opponent that’s always played them tough.
“Just [been] fine tuning what’s been a very good preseason,” said Head Coach Mark Briggs of the club’s preparations for opening night. “And getting everybody on the same page from a tactical standpoint to get ready to go to what’s a difficult place to play.”
“We’re trying to get down to the game plan of what we want to do,” said forwad Russell Cicerone Tuesday. “And making sure there’s no doubts in anyone’s mind what their role is for the game [in El Paso].”
While the same foe as last year’s season opener at home, the Texas club brings a new squad led by a new coach. And playing their first match at home this season, they’re certain to pose a challenge by providing a tough environment to play in. With that in mind, Sacramento’s approach is set on managing what’s in their control and keeping their mindset strong.
“We’ve got to have the right mindset, and the right mentality,” said Head Coach Mark Briggs. “It’s an intimidating environment, their fans get behind them. We’ve got to manage ourselves – and if we do that the right way, we’ll be able to quiet the atmosphere and come away with something.”
After the last week’s success in exhibitions, all 23 players are eager to play for three points every night. The weekly goal now remains the same – and it’s brought the energy of every player up knowing the season is finally here.
“We’re ready to get on the field and play for real points,” Briggs continued. “It’s now about stepping on the field, playing for points and trying to get wins.”
