Republic FC – The Latest
Sacramento returned home from Florida on Sunday with a point, securing a draw with the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium. The club started slow, going down a goal just before the half-hour mark. But after a goal line save by Jack Gurr kept out a big chance from the hosts, Republic FC was off and running. The club takes to San Diego with momentum from a strong second half performance that saw them dominate on all fronts even if they didn’t find a winner.
Know Your Opponent – San Diego
Last week, Loyal SC played a similar game to Sacramento. After falling behind early on the road against San Antonio FC, the club stormed back in the final 15 minutes with three goals to equalize and secure a 3-3 draw.
San Diego enters the match fourth in the Western Conference on 21 points. Since their trip to Sacramento on March 25, Loyal SC has been one of the league’s best. The club ranks fourth in scoring and has claimed six points from a losing position – second league-wide in that time. This week, they’ll be without two regulars, as defenders Nick Moon and Grant Stoneman each serve disciplinary suspensions.
Players to Watch
Forward Ronaldo Damus changed the game for San Diego last week off the bench. After entering at the break, the Haitian scored twice, putting in the club’s first score as well as the stoppage time equalizer. He has a history of success against Sacramento, tallying two goals and an assist against the Quails in 2021 while a member of Orange County SC.
Luis Felipe was the difference maker for the Indomitable Club the last time the two squads met, netting the winner in the 41st minute. The Brazilian has yet to score since April 22, but has still been plenty involved in the club’s attack. For his career against Loyal SC, the midfielder has one goal and one assist in six appearances.
Head to Head
Friday’s contest marks the second and final fixture of regular season play between the two sides. Coming in, Sacramento has won two straight over San Diego, taking three points last October 15 and again earlier this season on March 25. All-time, Republic FC has a record of two wins, three draws, and three losses, scoring seven goals and conceding nine in eight contests.
