Know Your Club- Republic FC
On Saturday, Republic FC closes out its three-matches-in-eight-day run with a road game against 2025 USL Championship title winners, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.
The Indomitable Club played their first of two games on the road against FC Tulsa on Wednesday as a rescheduled game from July. The match resulted in a Republic FC 1-0 loss to bring their four-game undefeated record to an unfortunate end.
The Boys in Old Glory began the game in Tulsa’s defensive third with multiple shots on target within the first few minutes. The game remained at a stand-still, with neither team making a shot on target after the initial round from Sacramento.
After the first 45 minutes, Tulsa had a go at their first shot on goal in the second half when a lofted ball to the feet of Jamie Webber for a shot on target in the 66th minute, netting the only goal of the game.
“I think over the last six league games, the performances have been very good, and I don’t think there was a lot wrong tonight,” said Head Coach Neill Collins.
“I thought we did enough at times to get [a result] but got badly punished for maybe one of the only errors that we made tonight, and that’s what happens against a good side. But as the team has done all season with any little knockback, we’ll learn from it, move on, be better for it.”
Sacramento doesn’t have to wait long to bounce back from Wednesday’s result. With the defending champs up next, the team has an opportunity to reset and move forward. “This week we’re playing two of the hardest road games back-to-back, so if we can go and get a positive result in Pittsburgh, we can still make it a really good week,” continued Coach Collins.
Know Your Opponent- Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
The Riverhounds come into Saturday’s game on a high note, most recently defeating Oakland Roots 1-0 on the road the week after Sacramento handed the Bay Area side a 3-1 loss.
An early goal in the 20th minute by Eliot Goldthrop gave Pittsburgh the lead. Although Oakland held 72% of the possession across the game and forced Pittsburgh to remain on the defensive side with more shots on goal, the Riverhounds’ initial lead gave them an advantage that proved to be more valuable than they might have thought.
In the Eastern Conference standings, Pittsburgh currently sits fifth and is on the hunt to secure a top four finish and a home playoff match.
Head-to-Head
Despite being two of the league’s longest-standing clubs, these two teams have rarely met on the pitch. Their last head-to-head was in 2024 for league play where Pittsburgh came up victorious in a 1-0 Republic FC loss at home. Sacramento’s overall record against Pittsburgh stands at 1-1-2, and Saturday’s game gives an opportunity for each club to take the lead in the series.
Several players have represented both teams at one point in their careers. Sacramento’s goalkeepers Danny Vitiello and Jacob Randolph both played two seasons for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, with Vitiello earning his first Golden Glove with the team in 2020 and Randolph securing silverware in last year’s title-winning roster. On the flip side, Pittsburgh’s Trevor Amann was a contributor to Republic FC’s 2024 and 2025 seasons.
