Republic FC’s U16 side is looking to build on a strong 2025-26 campaign. Last year, the team earned a spot in MLS Next Cup by finishing first in its MLS NEXT Flex group. With sixteen players back, as well as some new additions, the side is ready to face a new challenge.
Similar to the U15 team, the U16s’ regular season consists of MLS NEXT and MLS NEXT Flex play. Finishing as one of the top teams in each gives teams the opportunity to qualify for the postseason or compete for a playoff spot in the Next Flex tournament, as well as a ladder to reach the prestigious Generation adidas Cup.
The U16 group marks the beginning of a more senior phase of the players’ development, with the next steps of their soccer careers starting to take shape. College opportunities, potential First Team involvement, and the possibility of playing at the professional level are no longer distant goals – they become tangible pathways that players can begin working towards.
“With this age group players need to start understanding what it takes to perform consistently at a higher level, both on and off the field. The expectations around training habits, competitiveness, accountability, and professionalism become even greater,” said Academy Director Eder Quintanilla.
Returning for his third season, Head Coach Juan Aguilar takes charge of the U16s for the first time, adding the age group to his role with the Academy.
“Juan’s previous experience with the U17 and U19 teams gives him a very good understanding of what the players are ultimately working towards. He has seen firsthand what is expected from players as they get closer to college, First Team, and professional opportunities,” said Academy Director Eder Quintanilla.
Some players may get the opportunity to train with the First Team. Others may join the team on USL Academy contracts and get the chance to appear for the First Team in a competitive match. A special few have even shown that the professional pathway can open early, with players in the past earning the opportunity to turn pro after their U16 seasons.
Across MLS NEXT, the U16s will face some of the country’s strongest academies, making every match an opportunity to measure themselves against top-level competition. The stakes continue to grow and the expectations get higher, both for the team and for individual players.
