SACRAMENTO, Calif. (April 27, 2019) — A standout performance from goalkeeper Josh Cohen saw Republic FC continue their undefeated streak against Phoenix Rising FC at home after the two sides drew 0-0 on Saturday night.
Coming into the match, Republic FC were 3-0-3 at Papa Murphy’s Park against the Arizona club, and the home side had the better of the action in the first half but could not convert from several key opportunities.
Sacramento’s Tyler Blackwood thought he had put his side ahead in the 17th minute after pouncing on a rebound from Stefano Bonomo’s shot on goal, but the play was flagged offside.
Cohen made two acrobatic saves in the first half to keep the fourth-best offense in the league at bay and conserve Republic FC's unbeaten run at home so far this season.
His first was a 17th minute save off a point-blank header from Jose Aguinaga that Cohen managed to tip over the bar. The Bay Area native followed that up in the 41st minute with a diving save on a long-range effort from Junior Flemmings.
The draw moves Republic FC to 3-2-2 and 11 points on the season, placing the club in fifth place in the Western Conference. Next up for the Indomitable Club is a road trip to Las Vegas on May 4th.

What’s the latest on the team?
Republic FC (3W-2L-1D, 10 pts) return to league play this Saturday after having a bye last week. In the absence of a USL game, Republic FC faced off against the Stanford University Men’s Soccer Team last weekend and beat the recent College Cup winners 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Elliott Hord. The game gave Head Coach Simon Elliott an opportunity to rest key players, such as forward Cameron Iwasa, while giving some much-needed minutes to other members of the squad.
In their last home match, Republic FC defeated Austin Bold FC 1-0 thanks to a late goal from midfielder Jaime Villarreal. The Inglewood, Calif., native is back to full fitness after suffering a season-ending foot injury last August against his former club, LA Galaxy II.
“I'm delighted for Jaime to score,” said Elliott after the match. “Thought he played really well tonight and it's good to have him back. He's been working really hard to get back to full fitness.”
How about the other guys?
Phoenix Rising FC (2W-1L-4D, 10 pts) are into their first season of the post-Didier Drogba era. Despite no longer counting on the former Chelsea striker, Rising FC’s offense continues to produce—with 14 goals so far this season, Rising FC is currently for the fourth best tally in the entire league and third best in the West.
Fans at Papa Murphy's Park might also see some familiar faces on Saturday. Rising FC forward Adam Jahn played for Republic FC during the 2014 and 2016 seasons while on loan from the San Jose Earthquakes. The visitors also have forward Shaft Brewer Jr. among their ranks on loan from LAFC. A Sacramento native, Brewer Jr. previously played for Republic FC's youth academy in 2015 where he was the club's top scorer that season.
Head-to-Head
Sacramento and Phoenix enter Saturday’s contest even on points (10), albeit with different records, with the latter also having a game in hand.
Head-to-head, Republic FC is currently 6-2-4 all-time against their Arizona rivals and are currently undefeated against Rising FC when playing in front the Papa Murphy’s Park faithful (3-0-3).
- Overall: 6-2-4
- Home: 3-0-3
- Away: 3-2-1

RECAP: Republic FC Fall 1-0 on the Road to Portland Timbers 2
PORTLAND, Ore. (April 13, 2019) — A shorthanded Sacramento Republic FC suffered their second loss of the season after Moudou Jadama’s first-half penalty gave Portland Timbers 2 a 1-0 win at home on a rainy Saturday evening.
PORTLAND, Ore. (April 13, 2019) — A shorthanded Sacramento Republic FC suffered their second loss of the season after Moudou Jadama’s first-half penalty gave Portland Timbers 2 a 1-0 win at home on a rainy Saturday evening.
Portland was awarded a penalty kick in the 28th minute following a hard cross from inside the box that struck Shannon Gomez point blank in the arm. Jadama stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted past Josh Cohen to score the lone goal of the match.
Republic FC were reduced to 10 men after Villyan Bijev received a second yellow card within 17 minutes of his second-half introduction. Bijev had previously been booked in the 57th minute for what referee Mike Hohnholz perceived was simulation in the box, despite clear contact on the midfielder from a Portland defender. Bijev then received his second booking of the evening six minutes later after making a tackle on Eryk Williamson.
The visitors were then brought down to nine men in stoppage time after second-half substitute Haris Chantzopoulos was booked twice within a span of 12 minutes for committing a pair of tactical fouls.
Despite the numerical disadvantage on the field, Republic FC limited Portland to a single shot on target—Jadama’s penalty kick—across 90 minutes. Sacramento has a bye next week and will look to bounce back from the frustrating result when they host Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday, April 27.
