Sacramento Republic FC midfielder Tommy Thompson was voted USL Player of the Week for Week 8 after scoring a brace to lead Sacramento Republic FC to a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Bonney Field on Saturday.

Thompson was named USL Player of the Week and named to Team of the Week after capturing 40 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL market.

“He’s a bright player, he’s a really bright player,” said Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle on Thompson’s performance. “He was onto it in a flash. He buried it in a flash. And that settled us down. Once we had that goal, it settled us. We should have had more than two. I thought his second goal was excellent, great move.”

Thompson, a Granite Bay-native, has found a home pitch advantage with Republic FC on loan from their MLS affiliate, the San Jose Earthquakes.

On Saturday, Thompson recorded his first professional career brace in the win. During the 2015 USL season, Thompson also recorded his first professional goal while on loan to Republic FC, scoring the match-winning goal against Tulsa Roughnecks FC on August 28, 2015 at Bonney Field.

“It’s always a pleasure [at Bonney Field],” said Thompson after Saturday’s match. “I love it!”

Thompson was also quick to note that Saturday’s win was a team performance, with forward Cameron Iwasa earning a crucial penalty to set up Republic FC’s first goal and the defense recording their fifth shut out of the 2016 season.

Pitch maintenance is an often forgotten but a crucial aspect of the beautiful game. A poor pitch can cause problems not only with the rhythm and style of play, but also for the health of players, and sanity of coaches. An uneven playing surface slows down the pace of the game and any divots or bumps may cause minor to serious injuries to a player.

At Bonney Field, the pitch is kept in pristine shape by experienced Bonney Field Groundskeeper Tony Camarena and his crew.

Camarena and his crew take painstaking care to prepare Bonney Field’s pitch for every Republic FC home match, as well as Pro Rugby and USA Rugby play. In the 48 hours leading up to matchday, the pitch is meticulously mowed a day or so before and Camarena and his grounds crew ensure the irrigation is up and running smoothly. After the grass is mowed, the lines on the pitch are painted to exact measurements before each match.

On matchday, the field is groomed out with special equipment in order to fluff it up and create a smooth, soft pitch. Camarena takes a final walkthrough to make sure all areas of the field are in excellent playing condition. The very last step is to water the pitch just prior to kickoff.

“We water the pitch before matches so that the ball will move quickly,” said Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “Teams that come to play against us, they would probably prefer a slower game, so if the pitch is dry the ball moves slower, which means our attacks are slower. If the pitch is quick, then we can move the ball quickly and its more difficult for the opposition to get into position and park the bus. So we like the pitch wet. It makes for a quicker game, a more exciting game.”

Aside from regular post-match maintenance, the Bonney Field grounds crew also has to rehab the pitch following events that can be more strenuous on the field.

“Bonney Field is used for more than one type of event,” said Camarena. “We have different events that happen on the pitch, like rugby, soccer, concerts and other events, so there’s a lot maintenance that goes down for each that people don’t know about.”

After concerts and other such events, the grounds crew goes in and clears the pitch of any trash. The crew then focuses on taking out all and any divots on the pitch, and then fluffing the grass back to its original state as best as possible. The crew must also remove any equipment off the field quickly, including stages or other items that may cover the grass, so it doesn’t burn the turf when exposed to heat and sun. The last step in getting the pitch back to pristine condition is to keep it irrigated properly and undisturbed so that it may recover on its own as much as possible.

Burgess was Arsenal’s head groundsman and was recommended to Madrid due to the standard-setting pitch of the Gunners’ Emirates Stadium. The highly lauded groundsman became the first full-time groundsman at Real Madrid and is in charge not only of the pitch at the Bernabeu, but also the club’s training ground, Ciudad Real Madrid.

“Cristo Rey High School is a great example of an organization that exemplifies the Glory Glory Sacramento pillars of education, youth leadership and wellness,” said Republic FC Executive Vice President and Co-Founder Joe Wagoner. “Cristo Rey succeeds at providing a positive learning environment for their students and gives them work experience to help prepare them for life beyond the classroom.”

Cristo Rey Sacramento is one of 30 schools across the country in the Cristo Rey Network, a program dedicated to providing at-risk youth with a college preparatory education. Unlike traditional private high schools, Cristo Rey is only open to students who demonstrate a significant financial need and although the school is based on Catholic teachings, students of all religious and ethnic backgrounds are welcome.

Of the students who attend Cristo Rey, 97 percent request financial aid. The school functions through a work-study program in order to fund 60 percent of the cost of a student’s education, pairing each student with one of 90 local businesses that serve as partners to the school. Each student is assigned to work one day per week for businesses ranging from local corporations to nonprofits.

The Glory Glory Sacramento Fund was created to celebrate and elevate nonprofits that share the same indomitable spirit as our region and provides individual grants up to $20,000. Sacramento-region nonprofits that support education, health/wellness or youth leadership may apply.

Republic FC will select grant recipients prior to each of their remaining home matches as a part of the Glory Glory Sacramento Fund. Grant applications will be accepted until Sunday, May 15.

Bonney Field offers a variety of parking options. All vehicles headed to events at Bonney Field should use the Cal Expo Main Gate (located on Exposition Boulevard and Heritage Way) to access parking.

For easy parking and quick exit, fans are encouraged to use the Lot C parking entrance located at Exposition Boulevard and Challenge Way. Parking in Lot C is $8 per vehicle, cash only.

The closest available parking for fans attending Bonney Field are Lots A and B, which are located west and north of Bonney Field. Parking in Lots A and B is $10 per vehicle, cash only.

Bonney Field offers a variety of parking options. All vehicles headed to events at Bonney Field should use the Cal Expo Main Gate (located on Exposition Boulevard and Heritage Way) to access parking.

For easy parking and quick exit, fans are encouraged to use the Lot C parking entrance located at Exposition Boulevard and Challenge Way. Parking in Lot C is $8 per vehicle, cash only.

The closest available parking for fans attending Bonney Field are Lots A and B, which are located west and north of Bonney Field. Parking in Lots A and B is $10 per vehicle, cash only.

When the U.S. Women’s National Team burst onto the world soccer scene in 1991, no one could have predicted how they would revolutionize the American and global sporting landscape in just 25 years. Julie Foudy and Carla Overbeck led the U.S. Women’s National Team to their first-ever international soccer title during that year’s inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup, and it was only a taste of what was to come.

Since that first world title, the USWNT has continued to dominate the global soccer scene, appearing in every World Cup semifinal, making it to five finals and winning the tournament three times. Throughout the 1990s, the USWNT continued to make their mark, winning the gold medal match at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. During the 1995 World Cup, the United States fell to Norway in the semifinals, but went on to win the third-place match against China.

As if that early success wasn’t already enough, then came the 1999 Women’s World Cup. Before the “15ers,” like Carli Llyod and Sydney Leroux there was the “99ers,” the team of women who not only captured the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, but also the attention of the United States and the world.

The likes of Mia Hamm, Michele Akers, Brandi Chastain and Christie Rampone became household names and legends of not only women’s soccer, but of American soccer as a whole. Those women inspired a whole generation of young girls, while captivating a country that had previously not paid much attention to either women’s soccer or the sport in general.

That victory—forever immortalized in an image of Chastain kneeling in exuberance in her black sports bra—coupled with the repeated domination of the national women’s team has been pivotal for the growth of the beautiful game in the United States; a country where soccer has always been second tier to its home grown sports such as baseball, football and basketball.

The USWNT continues to break barriers and grow the game in the United States. Retired USWNT forward Abby Wambach is the leading all-time international scorer for men and women, with a whopping 184 goals compared to 109 international goals for Ali Daei of Iran, the leading man.

Following their most recent World Cup victory in 2015, the USWNT was honored with their own ticker tape parade in New York City, a first for any women’s international sports team. The team’s victory tour included a visit to the White House and personal congratulations by President Barack Obama.

Now, the team prepares for their next challenge – defending their gold medals in Rio at this year’s Summer Olympics. The stats are in the USWNT favor, having won a gold medal at every Summer Olympics except for one in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where the team took silver.

When asked about her team’s success and what mountains she has left to climb after the USWNT captured their third World Cup, USWNT Head Coach Jill Ellis had this to say.

“Well, I’m no mountaineer,” she said. “But I do know that the thing about reaching the top of a mountain is that there’s always another one to climb.”

Scoring goals is crucial for any club looking to win, but wins don’t come easy without a stellar defense. Although it’s still early in the 2016 season, Sacramento Republic FC’s defense is quickly emerging as one of the top in the USL.

“There’s been a lot of focus on scoring goals, but the big thing for us after the first seven league games is that we’ve been very, very hard to break down,” said Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle.

So far this season, Republic FC have allowed just three goals in seven matches and recorded four shutouts with goalkeeper Dom Jakubek in the net. Joining Jakubek in the backline are veterans James Kiffe and Emrah Klimenta, plus newcomer Chris Christian and Derek Foran, who has emerged as a regular starter for Republic FC this year after joining the club in 2015.

A strong Republic FC defense is not a new concept for the club, who has not allowed more than one goal per match in 14 straight USL matches, including the 2015 Playoffs. However, now in their third season in the USL, Republic FC’s defense is shining bright as they lead the USL in the least number of goals scored against the club.

“It’s an incredible record that we have three goals against in seven games,” said Buckle. “We have to maintain that. We’re very proud of it and it’s a lot of the work on the training field.”

According to both Buckle and his players, hard work and unity both on and off the pitch has been key to defensive success for Republic FC.

“The team’s been working hard. We’ve been working hard since the first day of preseason in February and I think that’s made a big difference,” said Foran.

The team’s unity has allowed the backline to move well as a unit, especially in terms of covering for one another and stepping up to the ball. Clear and consistent communication between Jakubek and his backline has almost completely shutdown Republic FC’s opponents on offense.

“We [are] big on defense and it shows with our stats,” added Klimenta. “Defense leads to great offense and hopefully we can continue to keep clean sheets and put balls in the back of the net.”

As the pieces begin to come together for Republic FC—especially in their dominating 2-0 win over LA Galaxy II—players are confident their hard work and united approach to defense will continue to lead to success this season.

Republic FC will be on the hunt for their second win in a row after handing LA Galaxy II their first defeat of the season last Saturday in a 2-0 win for the boys in Old Glory Red.

After capturing a 1-0 road win against Sounders FC 2 during the first match of the 2016 season, Republic FC lead the all-series against Seattle 3-1-0. Ahead of the match, see what’s new with Sounders FC 2 since the last meeting between the two sides.

KEY PLAYERS

Mansaray is a key part of S2's offense.

Currently leading the offense for S2 this season is Sounders FC homegrown player Victor Mansaray. The 19-year-old forward has been getting plenty of minutes with S2, scoring two goals in seven appearances. Mansaray made three appearances with the Sounders first team in 2015 and also received a call-up to the U.S. Men’s U-18 National Team.

Sounders FC first team defender Tony Alfaro has also seen plenty of playing time with S2 in 2016. He is the only player that has started and played the full 90 minutes in each of S2’s eight USL matches this season. Alfaro, a second round draft pick in the 2016 MLS Superdraft, signed with the Sounders FC first team on March 8, 2016.

Meanwhile, forward Andy Craven leads the club in shots taken with 12, four on target. However, Craven and S2 as a whole have struggled to convert their offensive plays into goals, producing just five goals in eight matches.

John arrived in Seattle from German fifth division club FC Erzgebirge’s U-23 side. Although hailing from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, John holds Canadian citizenship and has been capped internationally for Canada’s U-20 side, and just this week was called up to the Canadian U-23’s upcoming 10-day training camp.

Martinique midfielder Delem also has experience on the international level, having been capped 29 times and scoring four goals with the Martinique national team. Delem previously played for Club Franciscain of the Martiniquais Championnat National League.

Like Delem and John, midfielder Kapawa will be playing in the USL for the first time in his career. The 23-year-old midfielder joins S2 from Cameroon top flight club Lion Blesse de Fotouni where he played from 2013 until his move to S2 for the 2016 season.

Sounders FC 2 currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings with a record of 1-4-3. S2 kicked off the 2016 season with three straight losses, including their season opener against Republic FC which was a 1-0 loss for the Washington club. S2 finally snapped the loss streak with a tie against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros.

The club’s first win of the season was a 1-0 win versus Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Starfire Stadium. S2 went on to collect two more points with ties against Real Monarchs SLC and OKC Energy FC.
