Republic FC to Celebrate Giving Season With Winter Wishlist Benefitting Students & Families in Need

Sacramento, Calif. – This holiday season, Republic FC will launch its first Winter Wishlist benefiting students and families. This year the club’s coat, toy, and food drive will directly benefit the 2,300 students in the Robla School District in North Sacramento. Like many school districts, the issues related to the pandemic have made it difficult to keep students engaged. 

These challenges are exacerbated when the needs of the community are not met – upwards of 90% of the student families live at or below the federal poverty line, 20% of the students do not have a permanent address, broadband and internet connectivity are not always available, and there are no social or health services available in their own community.

Starting November 30 and running through December 18, Republic FC members and fans, Raley’s customers and the community at-large are encouraged to bring new coats and toys for kids ages 5-12. With the support of club partners Raley’s and KHTK, additional collection sites and events will be announced during the drive. In-person donation drop-offs will abide by local physical distancing guidelines, and sanitation standards for all items. Donations to purchase new coats and toys are also accepted at www.sacrepublicfc.com/wishlist. In addition to toys and coats, Republic FC and Raley’s are collaborating to provide families with additional resources to purchase groceries. 

“In the Robla School District we believe that every child can achieve greatness in life.  Unfortunately, so many of our students face significant challenges every day. These challenges are related to living in poverty, unstable housing, and little or no access to important support services and the pandemic has only made things worse,” said Robla School District Superintendent Ruben Reyes. “Coats, toys and food are things that many of us take for granted.  Providing these items to Robla families may seem like a small gesture, but has the potential to have significant positive impact in the life of a child who is struggling.” 

“This is our opportunity to collect new jackets and new toys from the generous members of our community. And when these items are delivered, we will remind every single one of these 2,300 students that they are important and they are indomitable,” said Republic FC President and COO Ben Gumpert. “As a community, we will continue to rally around those in need, provide comfort, and support the work of social service staff and beyond – including the the devoted team at Robla School District – who are invested in helping our regional youth grow and learn.”

Returning for 2021: Gomez’s Game a Glorious Combination of Grit and Grace

The 2020 USL Championship campaign was defender Shannon Gomez’s chance to return to top form and the right back rose to the occasion every time stepped on the pitch for the boys in Old Glory Red. 

And after such a strong finish to the season, Gomez will be looking to build on this year’s positive performances and carry the momentum into the 2021 campaign.

After earning his first appearance in the 84th minute on August 22 against Portland Timbers 2, Gomez was a dependable staple in the Republic FC backline as the right back made defensive contributions in seven of the Indomitable Club’s final nine games this season including two starts. In just the seven appearances Gomez made in 2020, he still managed to finish tied for fifth on the team in blocked shots with three and a successful passing percentage of 84% was the second-best by a defender on the squad.

He picked up the knock in late July 2019 during a scoreless contest against Orange County SC but after a lengthy yet successful rehabilitation journey, the resilient right back was called into action to help his side see through the 2-1 win over T2 at Papa Murphy’s Park. Last week marked the first time the U.S. Men’s National Team played in all of 2020 and the young squad earned some priceless minutes against top quality opponents Wales and Belgium. 

While the USMNT fixtures were just friendlies, some continents were competing in colossal tournaments like the Nations League and Euro Qualifiers. But after a pair of games representing their countries, players have returned back to their clubs and are primed for a positive push towards the top of the standings prior to the busy holiday schedule in December.

Jordan McCrary was a sturdy staple in Sacramento’s defense this season and the tenacious defender will keep his talents in the Indomitable City for the 2021 USL Championship campaign.

The fullback featured in 15 of 17 fixtures over the course of the 2020 season and lead the Indomitable Club in starts (15) and was the only one of Mark Briggs’ men to log over 1,300 minutes this season. His body of work on the backline this year was recognized and appreciated by the entire squad, as McCrary was voted by his teammates as the Team Defensive MVP – an annual honor the ferocious fullback has received for the second consecutive season.

Diaz Marches On In Save of the Year Competition

Republic FC goalkeeper Rafael Diaz’s brave back-to-back saves to deny a pair of Reno 1868 FC forwards from finding the back of the net on August 12 in Nevada has advanced into the Quarterfinals of the 2020 Fans’ Choice Save of the Year bracket.

Rafa received the majority of the votes from league-wide supporters in the Round of 16 bracket to advance past Portland Timbers 2 GK Hunter Sulte.  

The 16-save bracket was unveiled last Tuesday on USLChampionship.com and fans must vote for each matchup in each round. Diaz’s double-stop is the second matchup in the Quarterfinals of the contest and fans are encouraged to vote before the polls close at 9:00 a.m. PT on Friday, November 20 and can do so by clicking below.

With the game between the regional rivals deadlocked midway through the first half, a Reno cross found an open Corey Hertzog on the doorstep of Diaz’s net. The prolific USL Championship scorer rifled an attempt from point-blank that a courageous Diaz kicked aside. The save fell to Christiano François who steered a shot on goal, but Diaz was there to smother the threat.

With the game between the regional rivals deadlocked midway through the first half, a Reno cross found an open Corey Hertzog on the doorstep of Diaz’s net. The prolific USL Championship scorer rifled an attempt from point-blank that a courageous Diaz kicked aside. The save fell to Christiano François who steered a shot on goal, but Diaz was there to smother the threat.

Public Voting for Republic FC Kickstart Grants Supporting Latinx Businesses Now Open

Sacramento, Calif. – With over 50 businesses nominated, fan and community voting for the Republic FC Kickstart program will begin today at www.sacrepublicfc.com/suncrestbank. The second edition of the program is focusing on supporting Latinx-owned small businesses in the greater Sacramento Region facing economic challenges as a result of the pandemic. With the support of Suncrest Bank and the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the program will distribute a $5,000 grand prize grant, as well as a $2,500 award and three $1,000 grants.

Republic FC Begin Shaping 2021 Roster With Contract Options

Sacramento, Calif – Republic FC announced the first set of transactions in building its roster for the 2021 USL Championship season. The club plans to exercise contract options of five players into 2021 – Rafael Diaz, Shannon Gomez, Jordan McCrary, Jaime Villarreal, and Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu. At this time, the club will not exercise contract options for 2021 with Ashkanov Apollon, Villyan Bijev, Adam Grinwis, Rodrigo Lopez and Drew Skundrich. Juan Barahona’s and Matt Mahoney’s contracts will expire at the end of the league year. Brady Scott and Frank Lopez will return to their respective clubs following the end of their loan agreements. Sam Werner and Tomas Hilliard-Arce have elected to retire from professional soccer.

Additional roster announcements and player transactions will be announced in the coming weeks and through the winter. 

“2020 was a season unlike any other, and we are proud of our team for meeting a multitude of challenges head on and showing why we are the Indomitable Club.” said General Manager Todd Dunivant. “We want to thank each player for their service to the club and community, and we are looking forward to strengthening the team as we build the 2021 roster.”

In Head Coach Mark Briggs’s first season, Republic FC earned 30 points (8-2-6) in the abbreviated 16-game season, including a 10-game unbeaten streak and only falling twice, leading the league. The club earned its seventh consecutive playoff berth, dating back to the club’s inaugural season and first championship in 2014. Defensively, the club finished 3rdbest in the Western Conference, only conceding 18 goals through the regular season and playoffs with five clean sheets. On the attack, Republic finished near the top third of the league with 27 goals (1.68 per 90 min.) and fourth overall with 262 shots. This season also marked the continued development of youth players through the club’s academy system. Republic FC featured four players 18-years old or younger for 29 appearances – leading the league’s clubs not affiliated with a reserve squad. 

Rafael Diaz, Shannon Gomez, and Jaime Villarreal will return for their fourth season, while Jordan McCrary marks his third year with the club. 2020 signing Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu will return for his second season in Sacramento. 

Villyan Bijev joined Sacramento in 2017 on loan and signed with the club the following season. In four seasons, he appeared 95 times across all club competitions, scored 16 goals, and assisted 13 times. Off the field, Bijev was a constant fixture at the club’s community investment events, supporting various non-profits, fulfilling dreams through Make-A-Wish, and helping the club address food insecurity in the region. 

Rodrigo Lopez returned to Sacramento in 2020, completing his second stint with Republic FC after competing in Mexico for 5 seasons. In 2020, he appeared 14 times with one goal and three assists. In his first tour (2014-15), he appeared 56 times with 25 goals and eight assists across all club competitions. RoRo’s mark on the club’s history books includes a valiant performance in 2014’s “Miracle at Bonney” semi-final playoff match, where a second-half hat trick advanced the Indomitable Club to the next round of the playoffs leading to the team’s first championship. 

Second-year players Juan Barahona, Matt Mahoney and Drew Skundrich, as well as first-year players Ashkanov Apollon and Adam Grinwis will not return for 2021. Skundrich logged over 3,700 minutes in 49 appearances for Republic FC, and served as Captain in 2020. Mahoney appeared in 34 matches with over 2,200 minutes played. Barahona appeared in 25 matches, logging over 1,900 minutes with five assists. Apollon signed with Sacramento for the 2020 season after earning a contract following open tryouts and featured 12 times this season. Grinwis joined the club this season and started the first four matches before a season-ending injury.

JuJu’s Game-Winner Advances in Goal of the Year Bracket

The SRFC Academy product received the majority of league-wide votes in the Round of 16 bracket to advance past Jordan Doherty of the Tampa Bay Rowdies.  

The 16-goal bracket was unveiled last Tuesday on USLChampionship.com and fans must vote for each matchup in each round. JuJu’s stunner is the fourth matchup in the Quarterfinals of the contest and fans are encouraged to vote before the polls close at 9:00 a.m. PT on Thursday, November 19 and can do so by clicking below.
