Sacramento continues to shine in the soccer world, from the Street Soccer USA (SSUSA) National Cup to U.S. Women Youth National Team call-ups.
1. Lady Salamanders win 2016 SSUSA Women’s National Cup
Over Memorial Day weekend, the Sacramento chapter of Street Soccer USA, the Lady Salamanders, traveled to Philadelphia to join sixteen other teams for social change city programs for the 2016 SSUSA National Cup. The Lady Salamanders took home the title for the National Cup, a first in program history.
“Our goal is always to empower the players and to encourage them to show up with their best self at every opportunity,” said Head Coach Tiffany Fraser. “What a fitting reward for a group of women who took a chance and truly dug deep to meet their best self for the first time.”
Additionally, at the conclusion of the tournament six players and two coaches from the Sacramento chapter were chosen to represent the United States in the 2016 Homeless World Cup in Glasgow, Scotland this July 10-17.
Street Soccer USA is a non-profit organization with chapters across the country that works to help homeless men, women and youth through innovative, sports-based solutions to eradicate homelessness and poverty in the United States.
2. ESPN3 to Bonney Field
As part of USL's partnership with ESPN, Republic FC's match against Real Monarchs on Wednesday will be streamed live on ESPN3 as a USL Game of the Week. Kickoff is at 8 p.m.
The match will be called by award-winning soccer announcers Michael Watts and Juan Arango. Watts has appeared on ESPN3, Fox Sports Go, YES Network, the NWSL, and beIN Sports, as well as several college sports networks. Arango has announced matches for Gol TV, ESPN International, TALKSport, BBC World Service, World Football Daily and also appeared on Radio Globo in Brazil.

3. Roseville Native Shines with U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team
Late last month, Roseville native Maddy Schiffel was one of 20 players to earn a call-up to the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team for the 2016 Women’s Nordic Tournament, which began May 28 and runs through Wednesday, June 8.
Schiffel, who signed with Norwegian club Avaldsnes IL this spring, started for the U.S. on June 4, earning a 2-1 win against Norway. The U.S. faces England on Tuesday and can win the tournament win a win or tie.
As a youth player, Schiffel spent eight seasons competing for local Sacramento area club Placer United under the direction of current Sacramento Republic FC Academy Goalkeeping Director Gene DuChateau.
4. USA Rugby Returns to Bonney Field
USA Rugby returns to Republic FC’s home pitch, Bonney Field, on Saturday, June 25 when they take on Russia in the Eagles’ 2016 Summer Series. Kickoff is 7 p.m. PT.
The Eagles have never lost to Russia in six all-time meetings and have only hosted the match-up once in Colorado in 2010. USA Rugby is undefeated at Bonney Field, ending losing streaks against Canada and Japan in their matches at Bonney Field in 2014 and 2015.

5. Republic FC to host soccer doubleheader on June 18.
Republic FC will host a double-header on Saturday, June 18 when Bonney Field hosts a Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) match prior to Republic FC’s USL match against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros.
The women’s match will be between the California Storm and Primero de Mayo and feature former United States Women’s National Team midfielder Brandi Chastain and former Brazil Women’s National Team midfielder Sissi playing for California Storm. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
After the women’s match, Republic FC will square off against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros at 8 p.m.
Fans with tickets to the Republic FC vs. Rio Grande Valley FC Toros match will also be able to watch the women’s match at no additional charge, and will have a chance to attend a fan Q&A with Chastain and Sissi between the matches.
