FRESNO, Calif. (May 8, 2019) — Sam Werner’s first-half strike was enough to lift Republic FC past Fresno FC on Wednesday night in the first Highway 99 Derby of the season.
The game’s defining goal came at the half-hour mark after the visitors capitalized on a defensive mistake by the Foxes. Fresno keeper C.J. Cochran rushed out to the edge of his box to parry an incoming lofted ball, but his clearance fell short to Sam Werner. The Stanford Cardinal product saw the net wide open and volleyed a chipped shot over Cochran to tally his second goal of the season.
Sacramento suffered a brief scare after Fresno had appeared to equalize with just under a quarter hour left in the match. Juan Pablo Caffa swung a long free kick into the box that former Republic FC forward Christian Chaney rose to head past Josh Cohen, but the goal was called offside.
The win ends Fresno FC’s undefeated start to the season and lifts Republic FC to fourth in the standings. The Indomitable Club won’t have too long to celebrate the win, however, as they face another regional rival, Reno 1868 FC, at home this Saturday, May 11.
