RENO, NV (May 23, 2018) — Keven Alemán’s 69th-minute free kick goal was the difference as Sacramento Republic FC advanced to the Fourth Round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 road victory over Reno 1868 FC at Greater Nevada Field.
Hayden Partain had the first real chance of the match in the fifth minute. After a turnover by the Reno defense, Partain took a shot on goal that was easily saved by Reno 1868 keeper Kyle Ihn.
Republic FC continued to dominate possession and almost got on the score sheet in the 28th minute off a counterattack. Villya Bijev chipped a ball into the box for Keven Alemán who was clear on goal, but the Costa Rican was just a step late to control the ball as he tumbled in the box. Cameron Iwasa then had the best chance of the first half in the 32nd minute after a Reno turnover gave him a one-on-one chance against Ihn. Iwasa tried to beat him with a shot toward far post, but Ihn’s diving save kept the match scoreless going into halftime.
Alemán finally broke the deadlock from a direct free kick in the 69th minute. The midfielder curled a left-footed strike up and over the wall from 25 yards out to beat Ihn and give Republic FC the 1-0 lead.
Cohen continued his recent goalkeeping form as he got a crucial glove to a Seth Casiple corner kick in the 76th minute. The deflection blocked a header attempt at the far post from Gonzalez and maintained Republic FC’s advantage.
Sacramento will face off against Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders FC at home in the Fourth Round. The match is set for Wednesday, June 6th.
In the interim, Republic FC return to USL action on Tuesday, May 29, against Real Monarchs SLC in Salt Lake City. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
