Fans Welcome MLS Commissioner Don Garber to Sacramento
Over 3,500 fans turned up on April 14 to welcome Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber to Sacramento in an MLS Block Party that closed down L Street in downtown Sacramento. Indomitable fans packed the block on L Street between 15th and 16th streets, along with deVere’s Irish Pub and Firestone Public House, to celebrate more than just a visit from MLS.
The MLS block party was also a moment to celebrate all the hard work fans and the club have put the previous three years to remind MLS it is not a matter of it, but when, Republic FC becomes an MLS club.

Before arriving at the MLS Block Party, Garber met with city leaders, corporate leaders and members of the prospective MLS investment group. Garber was also given a tour of The Railyards, the tentative site in downtown Sacramento for Republic FC’s MLS stadium. At the block party, Garber addressed and thanked the crowd for such a warm welcome to the Capital City.
“We never ever, ever in our wildest dreams expected that on a Thursday and in Sacramento that people would come out to show their support for their city and club [like this],” said Garber to the crowd. “We will go to 28 teams, and we hope and we totally expect that Sacramento is one of the next four.”
Garber shared with The Sacramento Bee “We love the brand they’ve created…They’ve been able to check the boxes that are required.”

Former MLS player and host Calen Carr delved into Republic FC’s rise, which extends beyond the sport and into the community we live, work and play in.
Carr and his crew spoke with fans, regional placemakers, Republic FC staff, such as Color Commentator Kevin Goldthwaite, and players to further understand the impact the club has had not only on the pitch but on the region it calls home. Scenes include visits to the Sacramento Ballet, Rubicon Brewery, Old Sacramento, midtown Sacramento and more. Carr and his crew also took in the atmosphere at Republic FC’s match against rival LA Galaxy II.
“I didn’t know what to expect before coming to Sacramento,”said Carr. “I met so many different types of people that care about this club…everyone is talking about it. There is a real buzz around town. I like that Sacramento has some swagger now. It has been overlooked for so long and you can feel the pride when you talk to people in town about how much this club means to this city.”
