
Sacramento Republic FC will host the Colorado Rapids (MLS) in their first friendly match of the 2016 preseason on Saturday, Feb. 13. Kickoff is 5:00 p.m. PST at Bonney Field. The match is presented by Bonney Plumbing, Heating and Air.
Saturda’s match serves as the first match up between the two clubs and only the third MLS club to play Republic FC. During Sacramento Republic FC’s inaugural season in 2014, the club faced the Colorado Rapids Reserves in the first match held at Bonney Field. Sacramento Republic FC won the match 4-3 on Mike Fucito’s 84th minutes match-winning goal.
This weekend, several new players will suit up for Sacramento Republic FC for the first time. Newly signed midfielder Matt LaGrassa, goalkeeper Evan Newton and defenders Mike da Fonte and Chris Christian are all expected to see time against the Rapids, in addition to other players currently trialing and training with Sacramento Republic FC during the preseason.
Sacramento Republic FC are returning 14 players from their 2015 USL roster. Defenders Derek Foran and Alfonso Motagalvan, midfielder Danny Barrera and forwards Joaquin Rivas, Adnan Gabeljic and Cameron Iwasa return for their second season. Goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek, defenders Agustin Cazarez, James Kiffe and Emrah Klimenta, midfielders Max Alvarez, Octavio Guzman and Ivan Mirković and forward Thomas Stewart all return for their third season with Republic FC.
The Colorado Rapids have made multiple roster changes going into the 2016 MLS season. In the past month they signed Albanian Men’s National Team forward Shkëlzen Gashi and traded for forward Conor Doyle from DC United. Gashi led the Swiss Super League in scoring the past two seasons, tallying 19 goals in 2014 and 22 goals in 2015. Doyle scored two goals last season with DC United.
The Rapids will feature several returning key players from last season, including forward Kevin Doyle, who led the club in scoring last season with five goals and midfielder Dillon Powers who scored three goals and had a team leading six assists.
Colorado is coached by former U.S. Men’s National Team and Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni. He appeared in over 200 matches for the Rapids from 2002-2013 after making over 100 appearances with former MLS team, the Miami Fusion from 1998-2001. Mastroeni has also appeared in over 60 matches for the U.S. Men’s National Team from 2001-2009. He took over as head coach for the Rapids in 2014.
