It doesn’t get much better than this.
This past Saturday evening, the Indomitable Club cruised to a colossal 6-0 win over the visiting Tulsa Roughnecks FC. Captain Cameron Iwasa led by example, providing two goals and an assist, while forward Stefano Bonomo netted a brace of his own. Villyan Bijev, having dealt with a hamstring injury for most of the season thus far, appears to be back to full health, and like the team, is hitting his stride at the ideal time.
Let’s take a look back on Saturday’s perfect performance from the boys in Old Glory Red with three key takeaways following the big win:
Record Rout
Saturday’s 6-0 win over Tulsa Roughnecks FC was Republic FC’s largest-ever margin of victory in league play. Goals were provided by Cameron Iwasa (2), Stefano Bonomo (2), Mitchell Taintor and Sam Werner. Coincidentally, the last time four different players scored in the same match for Simon Elliott’s men was a 4-1 over Tulsa last season.
In the Club’s history, only nine times have four or more SRFC players found the back of the net in the same game and three of those nine wins were against the Roughnecks. Prior to Saturday night’s trouncing of Tulsa, the previous largest-ever margin of victory in the club’s history in all competitions was a 6-0 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup win over Fresno Fuego in 2014.
Bijev's Fine Form
Republic FC midfield wizard Villyan Bijev made his 100th career USL Championship appearance on Saturday night and celebrated the milestone with two assists in the 6-0 thumping of Tulsa Roughnecks FC. After battling a hamstring injury earlier this season, Bijev’s form is peaking at the perfect time and the former Liverpool FC playmaker has two assists and one goal in his last two matches across all competitions. The pair of assists were the first for Bijev on the season so it’s probably safe to say Sacramento fans can expect to see more of the Bulgarian-born winger causing countless problems on the flanks against USL opposition moving forward. The next matchup for Republic FC is a regional rivalry showdown against Fresno FC, Bijev’s hometown.

Brace Brothers
Cameron Iwasa and Stefano Bonomo both bagged a brace on Saturday night during the 6-0 Tulsa thrashing, earning both strikers a spot on the USL Championship Team of the Week. The weekly award was the third time this season Iwasa, now with a team-high nine goals, has received the honors, while this was the first for Bonomo.
Only once in Republic FC history have two players both netted twice in the same game, a feat that hasn’t been matched since the teams’ inaugural campaign. In 2014, Republic FC hosted and beat the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, 5-0, with Thomas Stewart and Rodrigo Lopez both scoring a pair each.
