Sacramento, Calif. – Republic FC has recalled midfielder Mario Penagos from MLS NEXT Pro club FC Cincinnati 2. Penagos was loaned on June 17 and will rejoin Republic FC’s roster for the remainder of the 2022 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval.
The 20-year old Academy product tallied seven appearances in 14 matchday selections for FC Cincinnati 2. He logged 159 minutes, and netted his second career goal on August 22 against Toronto FC II – then an equalizing score in the 79th minute.

Penagos debuted with Republic FC in 2019 after five seasons with the club’s Youth Development Academy. He signed a professional contract ahead of the 2020 season, making his pro debut and first career start on opening night. In 2021, he became just the second academy product to log 1,000 minutes in a season and led Republic FC homegrown players in appearances (20) and matchday selections (25).
Republic FC returns to action on the road this Saturday, September 24 against Western Conference leader San Antonio FC. Kickoff from Toyota Field is set for 5:30 p.m. PT, and the contest will be broadcast live on Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com and the FOX40 News mobile app, and streaming on ESPN+.
