Sacramento Republic FC is heading into Sunday’s fourth and final matchup with Tacoma Defiance looking for  a quick turnaround from Wednesday's draw with LA Galaxy II. With three games left, the push for the postseason continues to tighten up, and three points will go a long way.

“The key is our mentality going into the game… making sure the mentality, focus and attitude is right. If we have that, we’ll be ok, but we’ve got to turn up and we’ve got to have the right attitude and right mentality.”

“We've got to be disciplined from a defensive standpoint and we’ve got to be prepared to be a little bit nasty from an attacking standpoint. We've got to move the ball quickly and we've got to have good movements in the final third. We’ve got to finish the actions in those areas, but the biggest thing is playing with an intensity and a speed of play that's effective.”

On the club’s sense of urgency with three games remaining…

“Everybody understands what's at stake. Everybody understands the pressure within these games. That's part of being a footballer. If you can't handle the pressure of those games, then you should be working in a supermarket or something. This is what we’re paid to do. This is what's enjoyable about it. You're playing football under pressure to win games. We've got to win games.”

Republic FC is coming off a 2-0 home loss to LA Galaxy II this past Sunday at Heart Health Park. Despite the setback, however, the Indomitable Club still sits a point out of the fourth in the Pacific Division, one of four clubs separated by a point. Saturday will be Republic FC’s second of three games in nine days.

SRFC logged 18 shots against Los Dos on Sunday and have now recorded 10+ shots in eight of their last nine contests. Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu made his first start since the club’s last meeting with Galaxy II on September 1, completing 86% of his passes and winning 83% of his defensive duels on Sunday.

This season has seen 105 selections for SRFC Academy players, including at least one selection in every match and 34 starts. Mario Penagos leads all Academy players in both categories with 19 appearances and 10 starts.

Tacoma was minutes from snapping the streak last week at Phoenix Rising FC. After falling behind in the 78th minute, Samuel Adeniran leveled two minutes later before Rising FC stole the thunder with a heartbreaking game winner in the 90th minute.

“It’s a mixture of confidence, technique and intensity. We've got to go to the ball like we want to score. We've got to get in front of our man. We’ve got to make things happen instead of waiting for things to happen for us. We’ve got to make things happen. We’ve got to anticipate balls.”

On Wednesday being a must-win match…

“We prepare like any other game – there's just a lot more pressure on this one. We need three points. We need everybody in that stadium to get behind us, push us and create an atmosphere that drives the players on and gives the players confidence.” 

On having Luis Felipe back from yellow card suspension…

“You saw what Luis has brought to us throughout the course of the season: his energy, his long gangly frame and his ability to pick up second balls. He knicks balls in between lines and he's come up with goals this season. We’ve missed Luis, and it'll be good to have him back in the group helping us to get three points tomorrow.”

The Indomitable Club secured three crucial points in the Pacific Division race on Wednesday with a 1-0 win at Tacoma Defiance. Second-half substitutes Darek Formella and Kharlton Belmar combined for the game winner in the Pacific Northwest, with Formella notching his fourth goal of the year in the 78th minute to give Republic FC its fifth clean sheet of the season. Formella’s score was the club’s fourth game winner in the final 20 minutes this season.

Emil Cuello settled in more to his attacking midfield role with the Boys in Old Glory Red, creating multiple scoring chances for the second straight game while logging three attempts on frame. In the defensive third, Nabi Kibunguchy blocked two shots and dispossessed the Defiance 12 times.

How about Los Dos?

Galaxy II snapped a two-match losing streak last weekend with a 1-0 win at Oakland Roots SC, thanks to a converted penalty from Taylor Davilla in the 75th minute. Los Dos currently sits in seventh in the Pacific Division with 26 points and seven of their remaining nine matches – including Sunday – against divisional opponents.

Sacramento Republic FC underwent a final training session ahead of Wednesday’s midweek fixture at Oakland Roots SC. The Boys in Old Glory Red are coming off a momentous 3-1 win over Tacoma Defiance on Saturday at Heart Health Park, and now turn their attention to the upstart East Bay side in a renewed Northern California derby that carries Pacific Division table implications.

On preparing for an Oakland team that’s had late-season success…

“It’s going to be a hard game. It’s going to be a battle – one, for what’s at stake, two, it’s a local rivalry, and three, we’ve drawn every game with them so far. We want to go there and get three points. It’s going to be a fight. It’s going to be a battle. We’re preparing the players mentally for what they’re going to see: be prepared to fight and be prepared to battle. Be prepared to give everything you can for the badge on your chest.”

On match week energy stemming from the previous meetings with Roots SC…

“The results in the past haven’t played into it. It’s been more about where we’re at as a group right now. You saw it there – they’re throwing the American football around, they’re having fun. The energy is different. The buzz is different. It’s the time of the year that everyone wants. Every game matters, every point matters. You have to perform in those moments.”

On establishing momentum for the playoffs at a crucial point in the schedule…

“It’s a massive game. In America, it’s all about establishing a rhythm at the right time. We have an opportunity to get ourselves in a rhythm, but we’re just focused on tomorrow. We’re not worried about San Diego, the Galaxy or any other fixtures other than tomorrow night down in Oakland. We’re making sure the players are prepared, making sure everybody’s ready to go and get the result that we need to get. That’s all we can do, is take it one game at a time, focus on getting the three points in each game and then everything else takes care of itself.”

“A lot of it is recovery. Given the quick turnaround, it’s just about making sure we’re ready to go tomorrow night. We shortened some things up, did a little tactical stuff, worked on set pieces. It’s been a relatively light load and we’re getting ready to go tomorrow.”

On the team’s energy from Saturday’s 3-1 home win over Tacoma

“It feels good any time you can walk away with three points. We were in a bad stretch of games and had a rough run, so to pull out the win in front of the fans was very good. More than anything, every game is important now. We’re scrapping and fighting for the playoffs, and we have another chance to put ourselves in the right direction tomorrow.”

On continuing his scoring after Saturday’s goal in the 3-1 win over Tacoma…

“I expect to either score or contribute to goals every time I’m on the field. That’s my job. That’s what I get paid to do. Any time I’m not doing that, I feel like I could’ve done better. I’ll be looking to get on the scoresheet again tomorrow or create some goals for others.”

“Any time we’re able to have a positive result at home, it’s a great feeling – especially because of the support we get from our fans. Every game is vital. We need to take points from every game – hopefully three points from every game. Whether it’s at home or away, it really doesn’t matter. I’m just glad we got the win.”

On getting back to contributing on the pitch…

“I’m just grateful to be able to play. It’s a long year. There’s always ups and downs for anybody. All I’m focused on is doing what I can to help my team get a positive result. I’m grateful we were able to pull the win out on Saturday, and hopefully we can get another one tomorrow.”

The Latest on the Team

Sacramento enters Wednesday coming off a three-goal performance. In their third meeting with Tacoma Defiance, Sacramento pulled ahead early on a Cam Iwasa score in the 8th minute, and added two more from Emil Cuello and Luis Felipe in the second half. The victory kept Sacramento in the thick of the playoff race in the Pacific Division, and also kept the club unbeaten this season in matches where they have scored first. 

Saturday’s win also marked a number of firsts for Republic FC. Emil Cuello bagged his first goal with the club in the 66th minute, and recorded his first career assist since coming to the Capital City on Luis Felipe’s 77th minute banger. Goalkeeper Carlos Saldaña performed well in his first ever professional appearance and SRFC debut, tallying three saves.

Oakland enters the contest coming off an eventful 2-2 draw with Las Vegas Lights on Saturday. After taking a 2-1 lead in the final minutes, Las Vegas – who was down to ten men after a 73rd minute ejection – netted an equalizer in the 93rd minute. 

After a tough start to the season, Roots SC has turned things around, taking three in seven of their last 12 matches. They’ve outscored their opponents 19-13 over that span behind contributions from across the board, seeing eight different players find net since August 21.  The club currently sits a point back of Republic FC in the division table going into Week 25.

Wednesday will be the fourth regular season meeting between the two sides, and the final time showdown in the 2021 campaign. The three previous contests have all resulted in draws – the two clubs tied 3-3 at Heart Health Park in June, and saw each of their last two contests end scoreless on July 7 and August 11.

On training this week…

“It’s been refreshing to get a full week in.  The guys have showed intensity and desire. We’ve scaled back a bit and allowed them to just go out and compete, play, and understand the scenario we’re in and the situations we’re going to face.”

On improving offensively…

“We’ve done a lot of finishing and a lot of repetition in front of the goal. A lot of live stuff – not so much training drills, but more 2v2’s to goal, a lot of pattern play, things they’ll see in the game. So hopefully that translates on Saturday.”

On getting players back from injury this week…

“It’s nice to get players back and people fresh. It also creates competition, and competition is healthy. We need competition within the roster; we need competition in order to get the best out of one another. It has been great to have a few more guys training this week, have them competing, and it will be hard to pick a squad come tomorrow.”

On training this week…

I told the players before the game it’s ‘we, not me.’ That’s a message that we have to continue to hammer home -we’re in this together and we’re a team. Every person on the roster is important.”

On Republic FC’s defensive effort at Tacoma…

“It goes back to ‘we not me.’ We defend together, we score goals together. So as a backline, they performed well but also the players in front did the really important job. I thought Jaime and Luis were extremely disciplined. The front four worked their socks off as well. As a backline, I thought we were better. Individual defending by Jordan was very good. Individual defending by Duke was very good. Dan and Nabi as well –  you need that individual defending, which gives you an opportunity to then improve. We still need to get better at moving as a unit. Rafa came up with some big saves in critical moments. As a whole, I’m really pleased to go to a team like Tacoma and get a clean sheet. It’s a positive, but now we have to capitalize on it and win on Sunday.”

On the approach to training ahead of Wednesday’s divisional matchup in Tacoma…

“It's just the importance of the little details. That's what we've spoken about – performance, this and that. The goal on Saturday, we conceded off a set piece that we could have avoided by being tuned in and switched on to the little details, being a little more savvy with the things that happen outside the game. We have to we have to be more focused in on the little details.”

On the group’s confidence in finishing build ups…

“It’s the little details. The devil’s in the detail, a saying I like to use. You can play as well as you like, but if you lose focus in the last moment, if you lose focus from a set piece, if you lose focus from a free kick, doesn't matter how well you play. We create opportunities and we get there, but it’s the final detail, whatever that may be – whether it's in front of goal, whether it's in front of our own goal. Nobody cares how well you play, people care about what happens in both 18-yard boxes, and that's what's most important.”

On having three games in nine days…

“It's not easy. They have to use ice baths, they have to make sure they get the right amount of sleep, they have to make sure they're eating the right foods, they're drinking the right amount of fluids.They have to you have to do everything in their power over the next eight days to make sure they're looking after themselves. And then from a club perspective, we can utilize cryotherapy, massage, the float spa and try and get them as fresh as possible as they can be for each game.”

“We're all confident. There are a lot of points that we have to win against these teams from our division that we're fighting for a spot in the playoffs. We’ve got to look at all of these games as a final.”
