Republic FC allowed a goal just 10 seconds into the match, but took over soon after, dominating the match for its remainder. Newcomers Luis Espino and Villyan Bijev scored the goals as Republic FC earned their second straight victory.
Espino made his Republic FC debut on Saturday, starting out his tenure with a bang. The midfielder headed a Sammy Ochoa cross into the far post in the 26th minute to equalize for Republic FC. Espino joins Justin Braun, Adam Jahn, JJ Koval, Mark Sherrod, Wilson Kneeshaw and Ochoa as Republic FC players who have scored in their USL debut with the club.
The goal was Bijev’s second in his last two appearances. The midfielder scored the match-winning goal against Los Dos on Saturday. Bijev has now scored nine USL goals this season, two with Republic FC and seven with Portland Timbers 2.
Ochoa recorded his club-leading sixth assist of the season when he assisted Espino’s goal on Saturday. Ochoa has five goals and six assists in 20 appearances this season, leading the club in assists and third in goals scored.
Energy FC come into the match following a 3-0 loss to Reno 1868 FC on Wednesday, Sept. 20. The loss is just the club’s third in their last 12 matches. Energy has been a very strong team at home, going 8-2-3 in the friendly confines of Taft Stadium, but have struggled away from home, going 2-9-4 in away matches this season.
Forward José Angulo has been an important offensive player for Energy FC this season, scoring eight goals and recording three assists. Angulo leads the club in goals and is second in assists. Angulo was the 2013 USL MVP after leading the USL in goals scored while with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
