The midseason transition last summer for Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle did not provide ideal conditions for him to set a vision and value system for his players and staff. That is not the case 2016. As Buckle leads the team into its third season, the vibe and culture in the locker room has been reenergized and refocused.
“I feel that we’ve got a great mentality at the club,” said Buckle. “There’s a different feel about us this season.”
A philosophy that everything comes back to the “badge”—the team—is a core value that Buckle believes will drive success during their 2016 campaign.

A philosophy that everything comes back to the “badge”—the team—is a core value that Buckle believes will drive success during their 2016 campaign.
“It’s all about the team, and if the team wins, great,” said forward Thomas Stewart to USLSoccer.comabout club’s approach to 2016. “I don’t care if I don’t score, as long as we win the game. That’s the main thing, and as long as I’ve done my job in the pits to help my teammates win, that’s all that matters.”
Such a mentality isn’t unique to Republic FC, soccer or even sports as a whole. The idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts is a philosophical concept dating back to early Greek philosophy.
At the core level, Republic FC’s guiding philosophy this season is simply put: a good team on the pitch achieves more than the sum of its individual players. It’s not the numbers on the back of the kits, rather it’s the badge, or crest, worn over players’ hearts that the team believes will lead the club to success.
“We have a roster where every player at the club is capable of playing and that’s led to a great quality of play, the determination of the squad and togetherness,” said Buckle, who noted that the key to this year’s roster is the group as a whole.

From the team’s preseason training trip to Mexico to daily team lunches to an upcoming bonding experience at a Sacramento Kings game, the guiding philosophy and key for Republic FC in 2016 is the team. Both Buckle and Director of Football Graham Smith worked diligently throughout the offseason and preseason to build a roster with synergy, in which players’ strengths are complimentary toward one another and lead to the club’s ultimate goal: competing on the pitch.
“Obviously goals help that – goals win games – but it doesn’t matter who scores on the day. It’s about picking up the three points,” said Stewart. “If we want to challenge for the championship…we’ve got to all chip in and make sure we’re consistent this year.”
For returning and new faces alike, this year’s philosophy is building a Republic FC squad that is hungry for wins right out of the gate during their 2016 USL campaign.
“All the new guys are integrating well into the team, the guys that have been here have done a great job welcoming us in. We’re building a good team chemistry,” said defender Chris Christian.
At the forefront of the group’s thoughts this week – Republic FC’s season opener on Friday in Seattle.
“We’ve played a lot of preseason games, but to start playing official matches is exciting,” said Christian. “Everyone is just ready to get the season started.”
