What’s the latest on the team?
Republic FC (9-9-4, 31 pts) have picked up points in each of their last three matches and have every intention of continuing that trend against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Saturday night. The boys in Old Glory Red recently came away with a point from a scoreless draw with Las Vegas Lights FC at home last Wednesday, just days after escaping from Texas with all three points following a 3-2 win over San Antonio FC.
Against Eric Wynalda’s Lights FC on a nationally televised stage, Republic FC created multiple scoring opportunities and held the visitors to just a single shot on goal—a shot that a diving Rafael Diaz brushed aside to preserve the clean sheet. The Indomitable Club are now just one shutout away from matching last season’s tally of 12 in all competitions with 12 games to go. Simon Elliott’s men are currently tied for fifth in the entire USL with nine clean sheets in league play.

The draw against the Sin City club also featured Polish playmaker Dariusz Formella making his Republic FC debut as a 77th minute substitute. Formella isn’t the only newcomer on the SRFC roster and there’s a chance that the newly acquired talent could potentially feature during Saturday’s match. Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth (recently acquired on a loan deal from Minnesota United FC) and forward Thomas Enevoldsen (signed from Indy Eleven) have already been training with the team and could immediately see playing time given both players’ veteran experience. Shuttleworth, who spent 11 seasons in MLS with Minnesota and the New England Revolution, was a stalwart between the pipes during the Revs’ 2014 MLS Cup run. Further up on the pitch, Enevoldsen was last season’s USL Championship MVP finalist and Golden Boot runner-up after netting 20 goals, and adding 10 assists, with Orange County SC.

What about the other guys?
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (6-14-4, 22 pts) have been a tricky team to play in the Rocky Mountains this season, but their away form is a different story. After a 4-1 win at LA Galaxy II to open their league campaign, Switchbacks FC have yet to win away from home in 2019. The team has lost seven consecutive road matches and has been outscored 19-0 during that stretch. The last time the Colorado club even scored an away goal was a mid-April 2-2 draw at Portland Timbers 2.

The team has lost seven consecutive road matches and has been outscored 19-0 during that stretch. The last time the Colorado club even scored an away goal was a mid-April 2-2 draw at Portland Timbers 2.

The last two matches for Colorado Springs, both at home, saw the hosts on both occasions blow a second half lead en route to a pair of consecutive draws. On August 7, Switchbacks FC surrendered an equalizer in the 69th minute to T2 (2-2) and three days later, Colorado Springs threw away a two-goal lead by surrendering three straight scores before equalizing deep into injury time against Rio Grande Valley (3-3). Five goals in two matches is pretty good for Switchbacks FC, given the club has only scored 23 times (4th worst in USL) all year and has the league’s lowest conversion rate of only 9%.
While the Colorado Springs offense has been improving over the last two matches, the defense is still a work in progress. Wolde Harris’s men (Harris has been the interim head coach since Steve Trittschuh was fired last month) have allowed the 4th-most goals in the Western Conference with 43. But the backline can’t be the only ones on the team to blame, as leading goalscorer Jordan Burt (6) and assist leader Ismaila Jome (4) are listed as defenders.

Head-to-Head
The Indomitable Club is hoping to break the all-time series deadlock on Saturday against Colorado Springs, as both sides have three wins a piece and both teams have nine goals in the series. When these two clashed last season in Sacramento, Republic FC had to battle back from a goal down in the second half to pull off a 2-1 comeback victory. Cameron Iwasa and Villyan Bijev both found the back of the net to complete the come-from-behind win.
The most recent meeting these two Western Conference foes ended in a 1-0 win for SRFC in Colorado Springs back in mid-March. A surging Sam Werner was taken down in the box in the 56th minute, forcing the referee to point to the penalty spot. Iwasa stepped up and slotted home the game’s lone goal and ensured all three points were heading back to California with the boys in Old Glory Red.
- Overall: 3-3-2 (GF: 9; GA: 9)
- Home: 1-1-1
- Away: 2-2-1
